Dandy drew open the door, her cheeks flushed pink and her eyes gleaming. ‘I know I shouldn’t be astonished by all this,’ she said by way of greeting. She shook her head. ‘The world works in mysterious ways though, doesn’t it? Come in, come in.’

She drew them deeper into her small, dark house and ushered them into the living room. ‘These are the people I was telling you about,’ she said to Rue who looked wide-eyed at the sudden crush of strangers in the room.

‘This is Selena Wilde,’ Dandy said. ‘She knew your mother and has come all the way from England to look for you.’

Rue swallowed, shook her head.

Had Clover been right after all. Was this the lady?

Her voice was little more than a croak when she spoke, and she was light-headed. ‘Are you related to us?’ she asked, dazed. ‘Mum said she had relatives in England or somewhere.’ She pressed back against the couch, shaking her head. Clover was fast asleep under a knitted Afghan, her own blanky tucked up under her, one small fist curled around it, and Rue was glad. She needed a minute to take this in.

Selena perched on the edge of one of the armchairs, and the others found themselves holding their breath at the scene.

‘We are related,’ Selena said. ‘Although precisely how, I couldn’t tell you right now.’

Rue frowned. ‘I don’t understand.’ Then she cleared her throat, rubbed at the hairs standing on end under the pyjama sleeves. ‘Mum died three years ago. Did you like, only just hear, or something?’

Selena nodded. ‘I only just found out,’ she said. ‘I came as soon as I could.’

‘Selena’s only been in the country three days,’ Tara blurted. ‘And she’s spent almost every minute looking for you.’

Rue turned her head and looked at the woman who had spoken, at the rain-specked jeans and untidy hair pulled back into a hasty bun. ‘Who are you?’ she asked.

Tara grimaced. ‘I ah, run the bed and breakfast where Selena is staying.’

That was peculiar, Rue thought, bamboozled beyond belief. Wasn’t it peculiar? She looked at the third person staring down at her. ‘And who are you?’ she asked. He didn’t look like he was a social worker, but you couldn’t trust anyone, could you? She glanced over at Dandy, knowing she trusted her.

Which was why she’d agreed these people could come and talk to her in the first place. Because Dandy had said they were good people and were looking hard for them.

Other than that, none of it really made much sense.

Damien grinned at her. ‘Damien Murray,’ he said. ‘At your service.’ He laughed. ‘I actually drive Miz W around.’

Rue looked from one to the other. ‘That’s weird,’ she said. ‘You know that’s weird, right?’

Damien laughed again. ‘Maybe, but we’ve been plenty busy trying to track you down – you gave that Heather woman a good run-around.’

Rue’s face fell. ‘You’ve talked to her,’ she said, looking back at Selena. ‘I don’t know what’s going to happen,’ she said.

Selena shook her head.
